People who have high functioning autism can be educated at an early age to express themselves through different forms of therapy. In order to target relatively simply lives, a high quality functioning autistic needs a certain level of social skills. The development or implementation of these skills can be artful through a number of therapies including play therapy, psychotherapy, social stories, social skilled classes or groups and expressive therapies.

What are the benefits of art therapy?

The following is a list of art therapy other benefits –

  • Improve self-awareness
  • Allows an individual to target solely on the activity at hand and shut out other thoughts that may be intrusive.
  • Develops social skills
  • Changes behaviors
  • Develops problem solving strategies
  • Allows an individual to countersink in creative thinking in a safe environment
When selecting a therapist, keep the following in mind:
  • Find out about their education background and where they are receiving training
  • Ask what types of therapeutic approach do they use
  • Find out if they have previous experience with high functioning autism patient
  • Ask what you really want during a lesson

It is common for parents and even other therapists to assume that the techniques described above are art therapy. However mainly listening to music or painting a picture is no more art therapy than walking down the street is physical therapy Art therapy special education is a directed exercise that uses the art as both a motivator and a therapeutic tool.
